The Alliance arose from the need for member countries to strengthen their regional voice and readiness for carbon markets, and was launched in June 2019 during the 50th UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies sessions.

The overall objectives of the Eastern Africa Alliance of Carbon Markets and Climate Finance are to promote the long-term position and participation of Eastern Africa countries in international carbon markets and increase the region’s capacities to access climate finance for NDC implementation. In order to achieve these objectives member countries have identified Alliance National Focal Points which are responsible for raising country needs and coordinating Alliance activities within their national context.

The Alliance welcomes all Eastern African countries, interested in becoming a member. For more information please reach out to our secretariat.

The Alliance provides technical assistance, knowledge products, and capacity-building to governments. This includes training on Article 6 rules, guidance on carbon market regulation, and tools to assess climate finance opportunities. The Alliance also amplifies the region’s voice in global climate negotiations.

Member countries gain access to cutting-edge training, opportunities for South–South exchanges, visibility in international negotiations, and technical support in setting up registries, standardized baselines, and regulatory frameworks. The Alliance also helps unlock international partnerships and financing national projects.

The Alliance is supported through contributions from member governments and development partners, including bilateral agencies and multilateral programs. This blended support ensures independence, long-term sustainability, and alignment with global climate finance priorities.

Partnership opportunities exist for development agencies, private investors, and NGOs. Collaboration can include co-hosting training sessions, co-developing tools and methodologies, or supporting pilot projects. Interested organizations are encouraged to reach out to the Alliance Secretariat.

While private entities cannot be members, they are crucial partners. The Alliance convenes private sector dialogues, supports project developers to align with host-country requirements, and facilitates access to finance. This ensures that private investments contribute to national and regional climate goals.

Private sector organizations cannot be members of the Alliance. The private sector is however served by the Alliance through different activities and capacity building events on carbon markets and climate finance.

If you are in the Eastern African region and interested to join the Alliance, please use the partner form to get in touch with us.

The Alliance works with governments and partners to adopt safeguards that protect biodiversity, human rights, and community benefits. Projects supported under the Alliance must demonstrate high standards of integrity, including robust MRV systems and transparent benefit-sharing mechanisms.

Yes. The Alliance recognises the importance of inclusive climate action. It engages youth, academia, and civil society through regional workshops, consultations, and training programs, ensuring that the transition to low-carbon development reflects diverse perspectives and builds lasting ownership.

The Alliance supports various projects and programs in priority sectors for the region, such as renewable energy, clean cooking, forestry and land restoration, sustainable agriculture, e-mobility and resilient infrastructure among others. These projects are chosen for their climate benefits as well as their social and economic co-benefits.
