Burundi Carbon Markets Profile 2026

Burundi was one of the first six members of the Eastern Africa Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance, demonstrating an early commitment to leveraging carbon markets for climate action and sustainable development. The country has significant carbon market potential, mainly through nature-based solutions, clean cooking, climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy, and ecosystem restoration. As Burundi advances its development trajectory and implements its climate commitments, carbon markets present an important opportunity to mobilise climate finance through blended financing approaches that combine public and private capital.

This Carbon Market Profile presents Burundi’s carbon market potential and ambition. It highlights mitigation opportunities across forestry, clean cooking, climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy, and waste management, while outlining the institutional and technical actions required to scale participation in international carbon markets. Priority investments identified include strengthening the legal and regulatory framework, building institutional capacity, operationalising Article 6 authorization procedures, establishing a national carbon accounting system, enhancing monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems, and developing a pipeline of high-integrity carbon projects.
