Burundi

Early-Stage Development: Burundi is still at an early stage in its carbon market journey, but important groundwork is being laid to ensure future participation is credible and sustainable. The government has highlighted forestry, energy efficiency, and resilient agriculture as priority sectors in its NDC.

Building Institutional Foundations: While Article 6 governance structure are still nascent, institutional readiness and capacity-building remain the immediate focus. Current priorities include developing host-country approval procedures, safeguards, and MRV systems with support from international partners.

Piloting and Future Scaling: On the voluntary carbon market side, opportunities are emerging in small-scale agroforestry, efficient cookstove dissemination, and community-led land restoration projects. These initiatives can serve as pilots for future scaling once national rules are formalised.

Mobilising Climate Finance: In parallel, Burundi is tapping into climate finance through instruments such as the Green Climate Fund, which supports climate-smart inputs and agroforestry for smallholder farmers. This approach builds resilience while laying the foundation for future carbon market integration.
